Pastimes
Sri Camatkara-candrika

Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura

Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura’s beautiful Sri Camatkara-candrika comprises four narrations of Sri Sri Radha-Krsna’s enchanting pastimes. These stories are so delightful that one becomes joyful by absorbing oneself in them. By their very nature, these pastimes allure the reader to relish the eternal sweetness of the transcendental realm.

Sri Prema-samputa
Sri Prema-samputa Image

Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura

Early one morning, Vrajendra-nandana Sri Syamasundara, the unrestricted carefree enjoyer of rasa, disguised Himself as a young woman of heart-stealing beauty and went to the courtyard of Srimati Radhika. Covering His lotus-like face with a crimson veil, He appeared before Her, His eyes bashfully lowered. Within His heart, He yearned to hear of the excellence of Her love for Him and the inferiority of His love for Her.

The intriguing pastimes of Durvasa Muni – he who cursed Ambarisa Maharaja, he who blessed Srimati Radhika, he who incensed the residents of Dvaraka, he who was charmed by Krsna and Balarama – are bound to captivate all. This booklet, containing sixteen engaging narrations of the history of Maharsi Durvasa, is written in simple, story-tale style. In this way, it easily lends itself to drama and art and is sure to be a source of family delight.

Krsna the Lord of Sweetness
Krsna the Lord of Sweetness Image

Sri Srimad Bhaktivedanta Narayana Gosvami Maharaja

The very concept that the all-powerful Supreme Person is unaware of His Godhood, fears His mother, and plays mischievously with His friends is universally delightful. This book presents a number of the childhood pastimes of God, Krsna, who, by the act of His own spiritual potency, forgets that He is God and plays like an ordinary child.
These pastimes are described in India’s ancient scriptures, which state that although God is infinite, unlimited, and inconceivable, He is ultimately a person. He manifests in many forms and is mostly worshiped with great reverence. In His original and topmost feature, however, He inspires such intimate, sweet affection in the heart of his dear devotees that, although He enacts astonishing pastimes, both He and they remain unaware of His Godhood.

A Life of Humble Service presents, for the first time, his story, before he came to the matha and after. The article by him at the end of the book, entitled “Krsna is Only Hungry for Love,” is an indication of the vital message he carried. His sober spiritual guidance is invaluable to us all.

Because his blissful absorption in chanting, even in the face of severe adversity, does not waver for a fraction of a moment. This small book, compiled for our eternal benefit by Śrī Śrīmad Bhaktivedānta Nārāyaṇa Gosvāmī Mahārāja, consists of approximately twenty pastimes of Śrīla Haridāsa Ṭhākura, as narrated in Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata and other books. With the insightful commentaries of Śrīla Sarasvatī Ṭhākura Prabhupāda woven throughout, these documented accounts of Śrīla Haridāsa Ṭhākura’s life illuminate his astonishing humility, dedication, magnanimity, devotion and numerous other transcendental qualities, and strengthen our relationship with him. Utkalika-vallari – A Vine of Intense Longingsb Image

Srila Rupa Gosvami
Commentary by Srila Baladeva Vidyabhusana

Utkalika means “very intense eagerness mixed with extreme restlessness,” and vallari means “creeper”. Utkalika-vallari thus means “the vine of intense longings”. In this book, Srila Rupa Gosvami reveals the very nature of these longings, which consists solely of the desire to render service to Sri Sri Radha Krsna as the devoted maidservant of Srimati Radhika. “His sweet devotion to the brilliantly shining amorous rasa is a honeybee whose delightful humming has fully blossomed in this prayer.” [Sri Srimad Bhaktivedanta Narayana Gosvami Maharaja]

Ujjvala-nilamani-kirana
Ujjvala-nilamani-kirana Image

Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura
Translated from the Hindi Edition of Sri Srimad Bhaktivedanta Narayana Gosvami Maharaja

The Kirana – highly esteemed as the wealth of Gauḍiya Vaisnavas – takes us directly into the realm of the gopis of Vraja. What are their moods? What stimulates their love for Krsna? How do they express it? How are Srimati Radhika’s loving moods superior to those of Candravali and others?
Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura has presented all this in a kirana, or ray, of Srila Rupa Gosvami’s Ujjvala-nilamani. This edition of theKirana concludes with Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura’s Svapna-vilasamrta-astakam, in which Srimati Radhika relates a dream to Sri Krsna that has left Her bewildered. In the subsequent verses, She and Krsna discuss what She has seen.

These discourses were based on verse 11.2.37 from Srimad-Bhagavatam. “Therefore an intelligent person should engage unflinchingly in the unalloyed devotional service of the Lord, under the guidance of a bona fide spiritual master, whom he should accept as his worshipable deity and as his very life and soul.”

“I am writing something for those very lucky persons who have greed for raga (a state of intense absorption in Sri Krsna due to an unquenchable loving thirst for Him), but who cannot find the path to achieve it. This book will be their guide – a moonbeam (candrika) to illuminate the path (vartma) leading to the loving devotion of the residents of Goloka Vrndavana. This path is practically unknown in the world.” This is how Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura introduced Sri Raga-vartma-candrika. The Hidden Path of Devotion is a presentation of four classes given on this on this great classic.

Journey of the Soul
Journey of the Soul Image

From the discourses of Sri Srimad Bhaktivedanta Narayana Gosvami Maharaja

We are not these mortal bodies and this world is not our real home. We are but passers-by, taking a material body for some time only to leave it, and then taking another. Lost and forlorn, we remain oblivious to our blissful real identity. This journey of the soul ends joyfully, however, by the mercy of true saints, such as Srila Narayana Gosvami Maharaja. Part One of this book consists of selected lectures by him, as well as interviews and informal meetings on the topic of the truth of the soul (jiva-tattva). Part Two delivers three chapters from Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura’s Jaiva-dharma, and Part Three consists of quotes by Srila Bhaktivedanta Svami Maharaja, Srila Prabhupada.

Secret Truths of the Bhagavatam
Secret Truths of the Bhagavatam Image

From the discourses of Sri Srimad Bhaktivedanta Narayana Gosvami Maharaja

Srimad-Bhagavatam is the spotless Purana, the prema of Vraja permeating its every sloka. It is therefore natural to conclude that by hearing the Bhagavatam from a person whose heart is similarly spotless, being suffused with that same prema, one will receive its true message and one’s own heart will be transformed. It is with this purpose that we humbly present the series of classes given in Badger, 1999, on the secret truths of the Bhagavatam – from the First Canto to the Tenth – culminating in the significance of Sri Krsna’s pastimes in Vrndavana.

Clear and simple answers are given to many questions, such as, “What is the guru-paramapara?” What is the sakti, or potency, of Bhagavan?” “If the pastimes of Sri Krsna are beyond matter, then how were they able to be seen at the end of Dvapara-yuga?” “If Bhagavan is attained through the soul’s own self-manifested knowledge, then what is the necessity of studying the Vedic scriptures?” “Are all souls of one type or are there different gradations among them?” This book also contains an authoritative deliberation on the subject of the holy name and the different stages of chanting.

This authoritative book is an anthology of evidence from the Upanisads and Puranas like Srimad-Bhagavatam establishing Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu as the original Supreme Personality of Godhead and the source of all incarnations of the Supreme Lord.
In the case of discerning the truth about the Lord’s incarnations, only two kinds of evidence are acceptable. The first is evidence extracted from the bona fide scriptures, and the second is taken from the realization of great devotees, who are expert in the philosophical conclusions of the Vedic scriptures and who have had a direct experience of the Absolute Truth. This book is a limited collection of both kinds of evidence.

Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura

Commentary by Sri Srimad Bhaktivedanta Narayana Gosvami Maharaja

The pristine glory of Sri Krsna’s loving pastimes with His most exalted and spotlessly pure servitors, the damsels of Vraja, remains a mystery to those who do not take to heart the revelations of Gauḍiya Vaisnava acaryas, of whom Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura is prominent. This book, originally penned in eloquent Sanskrit prose, is like a moon ray (candrika) for those with a deep thirst (raga) to follow the path (vartma) to this love. The commentator, Srila Narayana Gosvami Maharaja, declares that few people even realize that such a path exists, let alone follow it.

Sri Satyavrata Muni, written down by Sri Krsna Dvaipayana Vedavyasa
Commentaries by Sri Sanatana Gosvami and Sri Srimad Bhaktivedanta Narayana Gosvami Maharaja

For thousands of years, devotees have sung Sri Damodarastakam, especially in the revered month of Kartika. These eight verses mark the profound blossoming of Sri Satyavrata Muni’s love for Sri Damodara, as he prays, “Please appear before me in Your beautiful, eternal form as a young cowherd-boy, and grant me the perfection of life.” The true meaning of this prayer remained mostly hidden until the late 1500s, when Srila Sanatana Gosvami wrote his elucidating commentary. Sri Srimad Bhaktivedanta Narayana Gosvami Maharaja’s lively and poignant supplementary commentary serves to make these essential meanings even more accessible to us.

In this beautiful song of the gopis, we are taken to Sri Vrndavana, to the bank of the Yamuna, where the gopis are expressing the deep pain in their hearts in their separation from Sri Krsna. The moods of their song would be impossible to understand had our venerable acaryas not revealed them. In Sri Srimad Bhaktivedanta Narayana Gosvami Maharaja’s commentary, he draws on the meanings they imparted, sprinkling them with the splendid realizations in his own heart, along with well grounded instructions for us all.

Nectar of Govinda-lila

Out of the seven hundred verses of the Bhagavad-gita, Verse 18.65 captures the essence of the entire Gita: “Absorb your mind and heart in Me, become My devotee, worship Me, offer your pranama to Me, and then certainly you will come to Me. I make this promise to you because you are very dear to Me.” The first three chapters of Nectar of Govinda-lila explain the three elements of this verse in relation to our aim to enter Goloka Vrndavana. Sri Raya Ramananda Samvada Image

Sri Caitanya-caritamrta, Madhya-lila, Chapter 8
Commentary by Sri Srimad Bhaktivedanta Narayana Gosvami Maharaja

More than five hundred years ago, the Supreme Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu sat with His intimate devotee Sri Ramananda Raya on the banks of the river Godavari. For the benefit of all living beings, the Lord inquired from him about the ultimate goal of life, as if ignorant.
Sri Ramananda’s initial response did not satisfy Lord Caitanya, who probed for a deeper answer. Again and again He rejected the goal Sri Ramananda put forth, calling it external. Finally, when Sri Ramananda touched upon the natural, eternal religion of the soul, the Lord was somewhat satisfied. His subsequent inquiries continued to depths that astounded and delighted His devotee, who replied wonderfully to each of them.

Venu-gita – The Song of Krsna's Flute
Venu-gita – The Song of Krsna

Srimad-Bhagavatam, Tenth Canto, Chapter 21
Commentary by Sri Srimad Bhaktivedanta Narayana Gosvami Maharaja

Srimad-Bhagavatam is the fully ripened, nectarean fruit of the desire tree of all Vedic literature, and within this Srimad-Bhagavatam, gopi-prema has been ascertained to be the ultimate objective of the living being. In the chapter called Venu-gita, some of the towering waves of this gopi-prema can be seen. A yearning to be immersed in this nectarean ocean sprouts in the hearts of the faithful devotees who are situated on its shore. In his beautiful elucidation on the verses of Venu-gita, Sri Srimad Bhaktivedanta Narayana Gosvami Maharaja reveals the depth of the commentaries his spiritual predecessors, Srila Jiva Gosvami and Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura.
